About
Miriam Rubin
I was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. Growing up, I heard stories of my grandparents bringing my dad to civil rights protests and watching my parents advocate for better housing policy, workers rights and increased accessibility for those with disabilities. At a young age, I became particularly aware of the inequities that existed in the education system, having gone to a private elementary school and then a public high school. I watched my peers in both environments go through starkly different experiences applying to college and accessing resources to support them through the process. I knew early on that I wanted to join in the fight for social justice, and began my career particularly focused on increasing access to post secondary opportunities through direct service advising.
My Experience
I bring nearly 20 years of experience working in and with youth-serving organizations, managing large budgets, leading and scaling programs, building partnerships, and supervising staff. My work spans education, mentoring, college access and postsecondary success, partnership development, and organizational budgeting. A skilled people and project manager, I hold an MBA in Non-Profit Management from Brandeis University’s Heller School.
My professional background combines policy, systems-level work, and direct service, across both public and nonprofit sectors. Before launching my consulting practice, ezmay consulting, I served as Budget Director for the Boston Public Schools (BPS), overseeing the district’s $1.4 billion operating budget. Prior to that, I was BPS’s Director of Partnerships, coordinating with over 1,000 partner organizations to expand equitable access to high-quality educational opportunities. I have also held leadership roles at several local non-profit organizations.
Through my consulting practice, I work with nonprofit organizations and school districts to help get big programmatic initiatives off the ground and support cross-sector collaboratives in moving toward collective action. I am particularly effective working with organizations who are about to start implementing a new strategic plan, and intermediary organizations that build nonprofits and public-sector partnerships.
I am a strong advocate for social justice, prioritizing equity and inclusive practices in every engagement.
My Approach
My approach to all the work I do involves:
Authentic relationship-building
Engagement at all levels
Development of a shared understanding of motivations and roles
Creative facilitation to foster different styles of engagement
Clearly stated goals and desired outcomes
I keep these values at the forefront of all my projects by getting to know every stakeholder involved and understanding their unique lens and motivations. I seek to include the voices of members at different levels of each organization with whom I work – from those implementing to those leading and see them as equally critical to moving work forward. Throughout my process, I make sure that the goals for our work are always clear and utilize systems to keep us on track.
Why ezmay?
The name ezmay is a merger of the names of my two kids (Ezra and Maya). Their arrival into the world served very much as the push I needed to take a risk and launch this consulting practice. For that, I will be forever grateful.
